Significance of Arba'een and the Performance of the Ziyarat of Arba'een

Why Arba'een?

Significance of Arba'een and the Performance of the Ziyarat of Arba'een

Imam Hasan Al-Askari (a.s.) includes the performance of Ziyarat-e-Arba’een as one of the five marks for a believer, in addition to reciting 51 raka of sala, audible recitation of Bismillah, wearing a ring on one’s right hand, and doing sajda on dust.  (This hadith has been narrated by Sheikh Tusi in the book Tahthib). Why is so much importance given to the performance of the Ziyarat of Arba’een and the observance of Arba’een (40 days of mourning)?
Ziyarat, as we all know is a visitation, which in essence, is the act of speaking with and visiting our role models.  Of course the physical manifestation of the ziyarat is actually being present in Kerbala to perform the Ziyarat of Arba’een, but, in reality, that is not possible for every believer.  So does making ziyarat while not in Kerbala give one the same benefits?  Ahadith tell us that performing the Ziyarat of Imam Hussain (a.s.) far from Kerbala would hold the same significance as being in the land of Kerbala, as long as the person performing the Ziyarat has truly understood the status of the Imam and seeks to emulate him.
Imam Muhamed al-Baqir (a.s.) states that the heavens wept over Imam Hussain (a.s.) for forty mornings, rising red and setting red.  As we complete 40 days of remembrance of our Imam, we re-assert our pledge of obedience and loyalty to him,
“I bear witness that you are the Imam (who is) the upright, the pious, well-pleased (with Allah), the pure, the guide and the rightly-guided.
I bear witness that you fulfilled the pledge of Allah and you struggled in His way…I am a friend of whoever befriends him ...”

By performing the Ziyarat of Arba’een, we pledge that we will continue to follow the path of justice and righteousness and will reject injustice and speak up against the oppressors of the time,
I am an enemy of whoever is his enemy
In essence, we make a promise to continue to mold our lives according to the teaching of Imam Hussain (a.s.).
But why is it that we mourn and remember Imam Hussain (a.s.) for a period of forty days and then move on?
Our Prophet has said, “The earth mourns the death of a believer for forty mornings.”   Therefore it appears that the deceased should be remembered and mourned over for a period of forty days.  Performing an act for a continuous period of forty days is also known to help one to not just form a habit, but also to carry on the practice for the rest of his life.
If we look at studies dealing with bringing a lifestyle change, we notice the time period emphasized to bring about a change is usually 6 weeks which is about the same time period as 40 days (to be exact it is 42 days).
In the book 40 Days to Personal Revolution: A Breakthrough Program to Radically Change Your Body and Awaken the Sacred Within Your Soul, the author Baron Baptiste explains the significance of forty days:
Why forty days? Because the number 40 holds tremendous spiritual significance in the realm of transformation. Jesus wandered in the desert for forty days in order to experience purification and come to a greater understanding of himself and his mission. Moses and his people traveled through the desert for forty years before arriving at their home in the holy land. Noah preserved the sacredness of life by sailing his ark for forty days and forty nights. According to the Kabbalah, the ancient Jewish mystical text, it takes forty days to ingrain any new way of being into our system….
Reciting particular duas for a period of 40 days is highly recommended in our practices as well.
The unit 40 (forty) is said to be very effective. If a particular Duaa is recited 40 times, or 40 people gather to recite it, or it is recited for 40 days then its effectiveness is highly increased. (Duas.org)

It is reported from Imam Ja'fer Sadiq (a.s.) that whoever recites Dua-e-Ahad for forty days, after morning prayers will be amongst the helpers of the 12th Imam (a). Visitation of the shrine of Imam Hussain (a.s.) as well as Masjid-e-Sahla for 40 consecutive Thursdays is also very highly recommended and is one of the acts that promises a visit from the 12th Imam (ajtf).
Thus, as we perform the Ziyarat of Arba’een and commemorate the Arba’een, 40 days of mourning of Imam Hussain (a.s.), we hope and pray that this forty days of remembrance of Imam Hussain (a.s.), brings about a transformation in us by which we can continue to follow the path of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and carry on his message of upholding justice with true faith and a strong sense of sacrifice!

20th Safar- /Arbaeen (Chehlum - 40th day after Ashura)

Amaal & ziyarat-e-Arbaeen
(Chehlum - 40th day after Ashura)

According to Imam Hasan bin Ali Al Askari (as)  The signs of a true believer are five:-
1) Pray 51 Rak—a’t Namaaz during the 24 hours of the day (17 Rak—a’ts in obligatory, and 34 Rak—a’ts in Naafilah Salaats).
2) Be in Karbala for Ziyaarat of Imam Husayn(as) and other martyrs, on Arbaeen  if not possible, recite Ziyaarat of the Holy Imam
3) To wear a ring in the right hand.
4) To put the forehead on the earth (preferably on the earth of Karbala) in prostration.
5) To pronounce “Bismillahir-Rah’maanir-Rah’eem” in clear and loud voice while praying the salaats.

Imam Ja'far bin Muhammad Al Sadiq (as) had advised  to recite the following “Ziarat” on the day of Arbae’en:
The purpose of Imams mission is very well summarised in this ziarat as  "...made every effort and put his heart, mind, soul and life at the disposal of Thy mission to liberate the people from the yoke of ignorance"

Peace be on the favorite of Allah,  Peace be on the beloved friend of Allah, His distinguished hero! Peace be on the choicest confidant of Allah, sincerely attached precisely like his father! Peace be on Hussain, who gave his life in the way of Allah, a martyr, underwent untold hardships Peace be on the hostage surrounded by the-tightening circle of sorrow and grief, killed by a horde of savages.
O my Allah I give witness that beyond a shadow of doubt he is Thy favorite and choicest confidant, who enjoys Thy confidence and favor, precisely like his father!
Thou looked upto him and elected him in Thy cause, picked and chose him for the good fortune, selected for him the best purified parents, appointed him guardian, leader, and defender of rights, a true representative (inheritor and progenitor) of guardians, leaders and defenders of rights, gave him much and more from the inheritance of the Prophets, put him forward as a decisive argument, along with the other successors (of the Holy Prophet-the twelve lmams) to the mankind. He met with deadly dangers, acted justly and fairly, made use of everything belonging to him to pay full attention to give sincere advice, took pains,
made every effort and put his heart, mind, soul and life at the disposal of Thy mission to liberate the people from the yoke of ignorance and evil of bewilderment, but an evildoer, deceived with empty hopes of mean and worthless worldly gains, had pressed heavily on him, and sold out his share (eternal bliss) for the meanest and lowest bargain, betrayed his "day of judgment" for a vulgar return, took pride in insolence, fell into the fathom- well of silly stupid follies, provoked Thee and Thy Prophet to anger, did as the harsh discordant, the hypocrite, the heavily burdened bearers of sin, condemned to Hellfire, advised to him, however, he (the Holy lmam), steadily, rightly and justly coped With them, till, in Thy obedience, gave his life after which his family was set adrift.
O my Allah, therefore, condemn them to hell as a denunciation and conviction; and crack-down on them with a painful Punishment. Peace be on you O the son of the Messenger of Allah! Peace be on you O the son of the first of the successors (of the Holy Prophet)! I bear witness that Allah put faith in you like He had full confidence in your father, and that you always looked for and collected good and virtue, lived a highly praiseworthy life and departed from this world a martyr, forsaken and abused; I bear witness that Allah will promptly fulfill the promise, He made to you, and destroy those who left you helpless and punish those who killed you; I bear witness that you kept your promise made with Allah, and strived in His way till what was certain came upon you, so curse of Allah be an those who killed you, curse of Allah be on those who oppressed you, curse of Allah be on the people who came to know and approved.
O my Allah be my witness that I make friends with those who love him and oppose those who deny him. I, my father and mother, are at your disposal 0 the son of the Messenger of Allah. I know and bear witness that you were "light" in the sublime loins and in the pure wombs, never touched you the dirt of ignorance, nor ever obscurity concealed you in its folds; I bear witness that you are the pillar of "Deen", support of the Muslims, refuge of the faithful; I bear witness that you are a truthful, well-aware, content, intelligent, rightly guided guide (Imam); I bear witness that the Imams among your descendants are the symbols of "conscious piety" and signs of "true guidance", the "safe handle"-Islam, and the decisive arguments over mankind; I declare positively that I have full faith in you and I know for certain that you shall return. I am, fully committed to the laws of my religion, certain of my deeds, my mind and heart ready for your return, and my affairs carried out in the light of your instructions, till Allah gives you permission, together with you, along with you, not at the same time with your enemies. Blessings of Allah be on you, on your souls, on your bodies when you are visible, when you are invisible, on your perceivable aspects, on your innermost genius be it so, O Lord of the worlds

The Message of Karbala

Karbala Imam Husain (a.s.)

The Message of Karbala
All praise belongs to the Almighty [s], the Lord of the Universe.
The moon of Muharram is upon us, and with it comes the Message of Karbala. As the river of tears starts to flow, and the thunder of matam (latmiyyah) fills the air, lovers of the Ahlul-bayt [a.s.] remember the great sacrifice made by Imam Husain [a.s], his noble family, and his loyal companions.
The Muharram period is a time to revive the spirit of Islam in our hearts. It is a time to renew our pledge to the Imam [a.s.]. Instead of simply going through the motions, Muslim Youths must fully understand and appreciate this most significant event in Islamic history. Karbala was the battle between justice and falsehood, the battle between freedom and slavery, the battle between humanity and oppression.

Janab e Fatema Zahra (s.a.) - TEAM 110
When the Prophet Muhammad [s.a.w.s] informed Lady Fatima [s.a] of the martyrdom of his grandson, she burst into tears and asked "O my father! when would my son be martyred?" "At such a critical moment," replied the Holy Prophet, "when neither I nor you, nor Ali would be alive." This accentuated her grief and she inquired again, "Who then, O my father, would commemorate Husain's martyrdom?" The Holy Prophet said, "The men and the women of a particular group of my followers, who will befriend my Ahlul-bayt, will mourn for Husain and commemorate his martyrdom each year in every century."
Indeed the meaning of azadari is so deep and the implications are so far-reaching. It is for this reason that the essence of Karbala must be relayed to the next generation of Muslims, and to the masses. By the prayers of Sayyida Zahra [s.a] this remembrance of Imam Husain [s.a] will continue until the end of time.

Qais Ibn Musaher: The Ambassador of Imam Husain (A.S.)

Qais Ibn Musaher: The Ambassador of Imam Husain (A.S.)
Qais ibne Musaher was a leading member of the Shiah community in Kufa. He had been sent by the people of Kufa to persuade Imam Husain to accept the invitation to go to Kufa as their Imam.
It was upon his arrival in Mecca that Imam began to seriously consider going to Kufa and sent Hazrat Muslim as his envoy to study the situation there and report to Imam. He rode to Kufa with Hazrat Muslim and brought back to the Imam Hazrat Muslim's message of the sincerity of the people of Kufa.
Qais ibne Musaher decided to stay on with Imam so that he could proudly ride into Kufa with the grand son of the Holy Prophet. Imam Husain was, however, forced to leave Mecca before he could perform Hajj. The caravan left Mecca on the eighth Dhul Hajj. When they reached the fourth stop of the journey, a settlement called al-Haajir, Imam Husain decided to send a letter to the people of Kufa telling them of his departure from Mecca and that he would shortly arrive in Kufa. He gave this letter to Qais and asked him to take it to Kufa. This was before Imam had heard of the death of Hazrat Muslim.
Qais was proud to be Imam's messenger. Indeed he is known in history as SAFEERATUL HUSAIN IBNE ALI, the ambassador of Imam Husain. He galloped towards Kufa. When he reached al-Qadassiya, on the outskirts of Kufa he was astonished to see a large garrison of soldiers guarding the borders of the city. He suspected some thing was wrong. He hid behind the bushes. At night he visited some bedouins who were camping around. From them he learnt of the arrival of Ubaydullah ibne Ziyad as the new Governor, and of the efforts being made by him to capture Hazrat Muslim.
Qais was in a dilemma. Should he rush back to Imam Husain to advise him of the danger or should he try to get into Kufa and help Hazrat Muslim? He spent the night trying to gather more information from the Bedouins. Qais learnt of how ibne Ziyad had spread terror in the city and how he had isolated Hazrat Muslim. He also learnt that the blockade was being strictly enforced and it was virtually impossible to get into Kufa without being caught. Qais was anxious to learn of how Hazrat Muslim was but the Bedouins did not know much about him. In fact it was on that very morning that Hazrat Muslim had been killed.
Thinking that he might be some help to Hazrat Muslim, Qais decided to get into Kufa. He waited until sunset. Carefully, hiding him from the soldiers posted to guard the borders, Qais tried to make his way into Kufa. He was spotted by some soldiers. Qais fought them bravely. Soon, however, ibne al-Numayr, the commander of al-Qadassiya came to the scene with a large number of soldiers. Qais was captured and chained. In the morning he was taken before ibne Ziyad.
Ibne Ziyad promised Qais to spare his life if he would mount the minbar and curse Imam Husain. Qais mounted the minbar and in a loud voice said: "O people of Kufa I am the messenger of Imam Husain ibne Ali. I declare before you that Husain, the grand-son of our Holy Prophet is the best man alive today."
Saying this Qais looked at ibne Ziyad defiantly. He then called for the curse of Allah upon ibne Ziyad and Yezid, and called for Allah's blessings upon Hazrat Ali and Imam Husain. Ibne Ziyad was beside himself with anger. He ordered Qais to be taken to the roof of the palace and thrown to the ground. As he mounted the steps, there was a smile on the lips of Qais. As he was being pushed off the roof Qais cried out: "MY salaams to you O my master Husain ibne Ali!"

Hazrat Ali Asghar: The Youngest Child of Imam Husain (A.S.)

Hazrat Ali Asghar: The Youngest Child of Imam Husain (A.S.)
Hazrat Ali Asghar was the youngest child of Imam Husain. He was born only a few weeks before Imam left Madinah. His mother's name was Rubaab daughter of Imra'u'l Qais who was the chief of the tribe of Kinda.
Rubaab had two children, Sakina and Ali Asghar. She and her two children accompanied Imam to Karbala. The fact that Imam took with him a newly born baby further demonstrates that his intention was never to engage in any armed rebellion.
At Karbala Asghar was only six months old. From the seventh Muharram there was no water in Imam's camp. Asghar was in great pain because of thirst.
On Ashura day, after Ali Akber had been killed, Imam Husain was standing outside the camp. He was left all alone and he was preparing to go into the battlefield. Just then he heard a child cry. It was Ali Asghar, tormented by the pangs of hunger and thirst.
Imam walked into Bibi Rubaab's tent. He lifted the child from the cradle. "Rubaab," he said, "I will take him to Yazeed's army. Surely they can not possibly deny this little infant a few drops of water?" Rubaab changed Ali Asghar's clothes. She even tied a small turban on his head. Like any other mother she wanted her son to look at his best in front of strangers.
Imam Husain carried the child to the battle field. Walking up to Yazeed's soldiers Imam Husain said, "This child has done you no harm. He is dying of thirst. I am begging for a few drops of water for him."There was no response. Imam said, "If you are afraid that when you bring Asghar any water I will drink it, look, I will put him on the ground and you can come yourself and give him water." He put the child on the sands of Karbala and moved a couple of steps back. You can imagine how hot the desert sand was. Asghar lay there not even wincing. He turned towards the enemy and stared at them. A murmur arose among the soldiers but no one came forward to give water to the baby. Imam took Asghar in his arms and in a clear voice said, "Asghar, my son, show them how thirsty you are!" Asghar turned his head towards the soldiers. He smiled sweetly. Opened his mouth. Brought out his dry tongue and moved it over his lips. The ultimate sword had been unsheathed!
The soldiers were so moved by this that they could be heard sobbing. Still, they were very afraid of Yazeed and none dared come forward to give water to Ali Asghar.
Umar Sa'ad was worried. It seemed that Asghar was emerging victorious in this confrontation against the might of Yezid. He looked at Hurmala, a famous archer, and said, "Silence Husain!"
Then a terrible thing happened. Hurmala lifted his bow. Aimed an arrow at the child. The arrow flew across the hot desert. There was a hissing sound. Asghar smiled. He lifted his head and arched his neck!! No civilized mind can even imagine what happened next. The hissing sound stopped and Asghar lay still on his father's arms.
Imam Husain looked down at Asghar's neck, he saw the arrow, he saw the neck, he saw the smile and then he could see no more!!!
Our Imam began to feel faint. For a moment everything went dark. He could not see! There was a total silence over Karbala, broken only by the sound of the gentle waves of Furaat. Even the enemy appeared stunned.
Slowly Husain turned round and now looked at the baby in his arms.
The arrow had passed through the tender neck and lodged in Imam Husain's chest. There was no way Imam Husain could dislodge the arrow. His two arms were supporting the still child. He looked at the sky, and prayed "Ya Allah, give me courage in this most difficult moment of my life. No Prophet ever was subjected to a test as severe as this."
It is said that the Imam was so shaken up by what had happened to the infant child that all of a sudden his beard went all grey and he looked an old man. With his teeth he pulled his abaa over Asghar to shield the body from the scorching sun. Then he took a few deep breaths, and began to walk towards his camp.
As he got near he saw Rubaab standing at the entrance to her tent. He saw the anxiety, the hope, the fear and the restlessness in her eyes. Our Imam seemed to lose all strength. He could not walk forward towards Bibi Rubaab. He took seven steps back saying "INNA LILLA-HI WA INNA ILAY-HI RAJEEOON". He stopped and thought that he must take the child to his mother. He again took seven steps forwards saying "INNA LILLA-HI WA INNA ILAY-HI RAJEEOON". Once again his eyes met with those of Bibi Rubaab's. Again our Imam seemed to lose his courage and walked backwards repeating "INNA LILLA-HI WA INNA ILAY-HI RAJEEOON". Imam Husain did this seven times. Forward and backward. All the time Bibi Rubaab's eyes remained transfixed on the child. Each time Imam reciting "INNA LILLA-HI WA INNA ILAY-HI RAJEEOON"
Finally, somehow, he got the arrow dislodged. He now took the dead infant to Bibi Rubaab. He said, "Rubaab! This is a test from Allah which no mother has ever been asked to go through. Come with me" Bibi Rubaab followed. With their own hands they dug a small grave! The father and the mother together buried Ali Asghar!!

Prophecy of the Martyrdom of Imam Husayn (‘a.s.) in the Musnad of Ibn Hanbal

YA HUSSAIN E SHAHEED (AS)
Prophecy of the Martyrdom of Imam Husayn (‘a.s.) in the Musnad of Ibn Hanbal

By:Dr. Sayyid Kàzim Tabàtabai
Ibn Hanbal says:
Muhammad bin ‘Ubayd has related to us from Sharhabīl bin Madrak from ‘Abdullāh bin Nujayy from his father who narrates that he was marching with (Imam) ‘Alī [(‘a.s.)] towards Siffīn and when we reached Ninevah, (Imam) ‘Alī [(‘a.s.)] cried in a loud voice:
“O Abā ‘Abdillāh! Be patient. O Abā ‘Abdillāh! Be patient beside the River Euphrates.”
I asked him:
For what?
He said:
“Once when I went to the Prophet I saw tears in his eyes and asked him:
O Messenger of Allah (S) who has made you upset? Why are your eyes moist with tears?
He said:
Bal qāma min ‘indī Jibra’īlu qabl, fahaddathanī anna al-Husayn yuqtulu bishatt al-Furāt. Qāla: Hal laka an ushimaka min turbatih? Qāla: Qultu: Na‘am. Famadda yadahu faqabaza qabzatan min turābin fa a‘tānīhā. falam amliku ‘aynī an fāzatā (A while ago [the Archangel] Gabriel left. He has informed me that indeed Husayn will be killed beside the River Euphrates.
Then he [the Prophet] said:
Do you like to smell part of his soil [where Imam Husayn (‘a.s.) will be killed].
I said:
Yes.
He stretched his hand and taking a fistful of soil gave it to me. As a result, tears started rolling down uncontrollably from my eyes.)”[1]
The annotator of the Musnad regards the isnād of this hadith as sahīh and writes that Nujayy is not the only one to narrate this from Imam ‘Alī (‘a.s.).

[1] Ibn Hunbal's Musnad, hadith no. 6480 (Ahmad Shākir).

The Land of Karbala.

The Land of Karbala.
Anas ibn Malik says: The Angel of Rain asked Allah's permission to go to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.). The Angel was given the permission. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) ordered Umm Salama: "Stay outside so that nobody could come in". Anas says: Al-Husayn (A.S.) came in and wanted to enter the room, but Umm Salama prevented him. Husayn (A.S.) rushed inside the room and jumped on the Holy Prophet's back and neck. The Angel asked the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) do you love him. He replied: Yes. The Angel said: Know that your Ummah will kill him, and if you wish I will show you the place where he will be martyred. The Angel struck out with hand and brought a handful of red clay. Umm Salama took it and kept it in the corner ofher kerchief. Thabit who is a transmitter of this hadith says: We heard that land was Karbala.
Umm Salama says: One day the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) was sitting in my room and said that no one should come inside. I waited outside. At this time al-Husayn (A.S.) entered the room. I heard that the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) was sobbing bitterly. I looked inside and saw that al-Husayn (A.S.) was in the bosom of the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) and he was caressing al-Husayn's (A.S.) forehead and shedding tears. I said I swear by Allah I did not notice his entering.
The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) said: Gabriel was with us in the room and asked: Do you love him? I replied: Ay, of all in the world [I only love him]. Gabriel said: Know that your ummah will kill him in a land called Karbala. Then Gabriel took a small amount of that earth and showed it to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.). Later on when al-Husain (A.S.) was besieged and was going to be killed, he asked what this land is called. They replied: Karbala then he said Allah and his Messenger have told the truth. This is the land of "karb" [which means sorrow,] and Bala, [meaning calamity].
Abd Allah ibn Nojji quoting his father: When Ali (A.S.) was on his way to "Siffin" my father was Imam's retainer in that journey when we reached Nainawa he called: Wait Abu 'Abd Allah, wait at the Euphrates! Wait here. I asked: what has happened? He replied: One day I was at the Messenger of Allah's (S.A.W.) presence and saw that his eyes were full of tears. I said: O Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.)! Has someone bothered you? Why are your eyes tearful? He replied: No, a moment ago Gabriel left me. He told me that al-Husayn will be killed near the Euphrates. Gabriel had asked the Messenger of Allah: Do you wish to smell the earth of his martyrdom place? I said: yes then he took a handful of the earth and gave it to me that made me crying.
